Can you think of anything better than waking up refreshed after a good night’s rest? We can’t.
Running a small business with operating hours that are seemingly 24 hours a day can sometimes take a toll on our circadian rhythm. As self proclaimed and accused “workaholics”, we typically find ourselves at the computer ’till the wee hours of the night. By the time that the oh-so-wonderful hormone called melatonin is released from the pineal glands in our brains followed by yawning and heavy eyelids, our clock reads a time far later than anticipated.
When the time finally comes to return to our Tempur-Pedic pillows, admittedly it is not always easy to unwind and fall asleep as we notoriously spend the next hour or so talking about life and discussing the tasks to be accomplished upon waking, among other things.
I think it’s safe to say that the vast majority of us experience occasional sleepless nights. It is universally understood that sleep is a vital component to your health and overall well being. We all are aware of these things yet so many of us have great difficulty making enough time for sleep.
Prior to becoming a nurse, I was more inclined to use homeopathic remedies to treat common ailments and was less in favor of conventional medicine. Fast forward to clinical nursing and managing an urgent care center, I gained valuable insight into the efficacy of certain medical OTC products. Therefore, as it relates to medical treatment, I personally am in favor of a healthy and moderate mix while following the advice of your primary care physician.
With that being said, Josh and I recently received a product to try as a way to begin our goal to regain a healthy sleep cycle.
ZzzQuil is a new branded over the counter, and non habit forming nighttime sleep-aid that contains only one active ingredient. Like many packaged foods that include a lengthy list of often unpronounceable ingredients simply do not do a service to the body. Therefore, I believe that in most consumable products (food or medicine), the least amount of ingredients is usually safer considering you know what the ingredient is and what it does to your body.
ZzzQuil contains diphenhydramine, which many of you may have taken before under a different name (Benadryl) as an antihistamine — for its ability to reduce the effects of allergies.
Diphenhydramine is a chemical that has several uses. Not only does it help with my own uncontrollable sneezing fits (thanks to you, Texas), but it also acts on the central nervous system to improve sedation (sleep). Although there are many effective medications currently on the market that are also intended to improve sleep, many are available by prescription only. Plus, some of them can have nasty side effects and may lead to dependence and/or addiction. ZzzQuil on the other hand, is both effective and safe. However, because everyone’s body is different it is always important to be aware that each person may react to certain medications very differently.
Our experience with ZzzQuil has been favorable and thus would be a recommended option for entrepreneurs, students, nurses, and other professionals who need to catch a few extra zzz’s. Obviously, for those with known allergies to diphenhydramine, this product is not for you. As a rule of thumb, prior to beginning any new medication regimen, it is always best to consult with your primary care physician even if it is sold over the counter.
- ZzzQuil is not for pain. It is just for Sleep.
- When taking ZzzQuil, you should give yourself 7-8 hours to sleep
- ZzzQuil helps me fall asleep fast and sleep soundly throughout the night
